You look at your plant and something’s wrong. The leaves are hanging down, the whole thing looks tired, and now you’re stuck trying to decide: does it need water, or has it already had too much?
This is the moment where a lot of beginner growers make the wrong call. Overwatered and underwatered cannabis can look almost identical from a few feet away, and reacting the wrong way makes the actual problem worse pouring more water on a plant that’s already drowning is one of the fastest ways to turn a fixable problem into a serious one.
The good news is that you don’t need to guess. Three quick checks soil and pot weight, leaf feel, and drooping pattern will tell you which one you’re dealing with almost every time. And for the cases where those checks disagree with each other (which happens more often than most guides admit), there’s a clear next step instead of a shrug.
Why Overwatering and Underwatering Look So Similar (But Aren’t)
It seems backwards that two opposite problems too much water and too little would produce the same drooping, sagging plant. The explanation comes down to something called turgor pressure: the internal water pressure inside plant cells that keeps leaves and stems firm and upright. Researchers call this root hypoxia, and a 2024 review in the Journal of Experimental Botany lays out how reduced oxygen availability in waterlogged soil disrupts root function generally, across plant species, once gas exchange to the root zone breaks down.¹ The practical result for your plant: the roots can’t move water and nutrients up efficiently even though there’s plenty of water sitting right there in the pot. The leaves lose turgor pressure anyway.
That’s the part worth sitting with, because it’s also why leaf appearance by itself isn’t a reliable diagnosis. A drooping leaf can mean “dehydrated” or it can mean “drowning.” You need more than one data point.
It also explains something that trips a lot of people up: soil that looks wet on top doesn’t automatically mean the roots are getting what they need. Then lift the pot. This sounds too simple to matter, but it’s one of the most reliable tools available, mainly because most growers never bother learning what their own pot feels like at different moisture levels. Lift it right after a thorough watering, then again a few days later once it’s dried out. Once you know that range, the pot itself tells you where you stand without needing to dig into the soil at all.

Test 2: The Leaf Touch Test
Texture matters more than the angle of the droop. Gently feel one of the drooping leaves.
- Overwatered leaves tend to feel firm, sometimes almost swollen or heavy, even while they’re hanging down.
- Underwatered leaves feel thin, papery, and limp closer to wilted than heavy.

Step back and look at the plant as a whole, not just one leaf.
Overwatered plants tend to sag all over a heavy, waterlogged look across the canopy. Underwatered plants usually look more generally dulled and deflated, like the whole plant has lost some of its vibrancy rather than just drooping.
One thing worth knowing here: yellowing lower leaves can show up in either condition, and for different reasons. Waterlogged roots struggling with low oxygen can’t take up nutrients efficiently, which produces yellowing that looks a lot like a nutrient problem even though the roots themselves are the issue.
Underwatered plants under general drought stress can also yellow as they redirect resources away from older leaves. What to Do When the Tests Disagree

This happens more than any comparison table admits. Maybe the soil feels a little wet but the leaves feel papery. Maybe you watered recently and the plant is still drooping. If your three tests aren’t lining up cleanly, you’re not doing anything wrong it’s a genuinely common situation, not a sign you’re missing something obvious.
Here’s the practical path forward:
- If the signals are close but not contradictory (say, soil is borderline moist and leaves are borderline firm), wait about 24 hours and recheck. Some drooping especially right before lights-off on an indoor setup, or during the hottest part of the day resolves on its own without any action.

The point of this step isn’t to make you paranoid about checking roots constantly. It’s a last resort for genuinely ambiguous cases, not step one.

How to Fix an Overwatered Plant
Stop watering. Let the soil dry out to a reasonable depth before you water again, and use the pot-weight test from earlier to judge when that point has arrived rather than watering on a schedule. If this keeps happening, look at drainage a pot without enough drainage holes, or one that’s oversized for the plant’s current root system, holds excess water for far longer than the roots can use.
One mistake worth naming directly: when a plant looks stressed, the instinct is often to help it along with a feeding or a nutrient boost. Let the soil dry out first.
How to Fix an Underwatered Plant
Water thoroughly and evenly until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot. Most underwatered plants bounce back within a few hours once they’ve actually gotten a proper drink.
If the soil has gone completely dry, it can become hydrophobic water-repellent and a normal watering will just run down the inside edge of the pot and out the bottom without really soaking in. If you notice water draining fast without the soil visibly darkening, water slowly in smaller amounts over 15–20 minutes, or set the pot in a shallow tray of water for 20–30 minutes so the soil can pull moisture up from below.
Resist the urge to overcorrect with one massive watering either. A thorough, even soak beats a flood.
Recovery Timelines: What to Expect
This is where a lot of anxiety comes from not knowing whether your fix is actually working, or whether something’s still wrong.
Underwatered plants usually perk back up within a few hours to a couple of days, since the fix is direct: the roots just need water and they can use it almost immediately once it’s available.
Overwatered plants take longer, generally several days up to about a week for more serious cases, because the roots need time to recover function once oxygen becomes available again there’s no way to instantly reverse hypoxic stress the way you can instantly rehydrate a dry root.
Both of those are ranges, not promises. A severely overwatered plant in a large, slow-draining pot in a cool room will take longer than a mildly overwatered plant in a small, fast-draining one in a warm room. If you’ve made the correct fix and you’re not seeing any improvement after the upper end of these ranges, that’s a reasonable point to consider whether something else like root rot is also involved.
Does Growth Stage Change This?
Seedlings are more sensitive to both extremes than mature plants, and for a straightforward reason: their root systems are small, so there’s less buffering capacity before a watering mistake shows up as visible stress. That cuts both ways seedlings often show symptoms faster, but they can also bounce back faster once corrected, simply because there’s less plant to recover.
Vegetative and flowering plants generally have deeper, more established root systems and more tolerance for a watering that’s slightly off. That doesn’t mean the diagnostic approach changes the same three tests apply at every stage it just means the margin for error is tighter early on.
Preventing Both Problems Going Forward
- Water based on the soil and the pot, not a calendar. A fixed “every three days” schedule ignores changes in temperature, humidity, and how much the plant has grown.
- Make sure the pot actually drains. Containers without drainage holes trap water at the bottom with nowhere to go.
- Match pot size to the plant. An oversized pot holds far more soil volume and water than the current root system can use, which keeps the root zone wet for longer than it should be.
